Four generations…the youngest growing within his momma…
I brush away at my
Milk-white wall.
My arms go up and down
Vigorously brushing,
My feet are planted on the wooden ladder
That teeters slightly under me.
I brush away the little fighting men
Pencilled on the wall;
I brush away the half sun formed
By a half moon and a few lines, unable to rise;
I brush away eighteen horizontal beams
That stand tall behind the door.
I brush away at my
Milk-white wall.
Wanting my wall to be gleaming clean again,
I must pay with strength I never had before.
To take the place of the milky whiteness
There will be greens, tender as young shoots,
Not gray,
Or dusky yellow.
I toil, I’m weary
But that soft green will ripen,
Doggedly grow and spread
Under my caring hands.
O my wall
Will be gleaming clean again!
Leaning against the door
Like powerful pillar,
I solemnly
Ponder…
